The name “Nyankoba” is derived from the word “Enkoba” which means “thunder” in the local gusii language. Tea was first grown in the area in the early 1960’s and is the oldest Tea Factory in the Kisii region.

Tea was first grown in the area in the early 1960’s. The construction work was commissioned on 14th May 1965 by Hon L. G. Sagini who was the Minister for Local Government. It was officially opened on 9th March 1966 by Hon. B. R. McKenzie the then Minister for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry.

Nyankoba Tea Factory is situated North West of Nairobi, and South East of Kisumu, the lake-side city. It is 25 km from Kisii town on Kisii –Sotik highway. Administratively, the factory is in Borabu division in Masaba district of Nyanza Province
